Writing

The words we use every day carry history and meaning. They reflect the values and norms of our society. By changing the way we communicate, we can also change our social behaviour.

Inclusive Writing

Texts should not favor one gender over another. Inclusive writing means avoiding the generic masculine and aiming for equal representation of all genders. This chapter introduces these ideas.

    # Use “you” or “they” to talk about players

Pick one way to talk about players and use it everywhere.

    Option A – Use “you”
    This is clear and friendly.
“On your turn, you draw 2 cards.”
“If you have 5 coins, you may buy a building.”

Option B – Use singular “they”
This works well when you talk about “a player” in general.
“Each player draws 2 cards on their turn.”
“When a player builds a house, they gain 3 points.”

    # Replace gendered words with neutral ones

    Replace gendered job titles:
❌ The chairman takes the first turn.
✅ The chairperson takes the first turn.
✅ The leader takes the first turn.

    # Vary names and pronouns in your examples

When you give examples in the rulebook, show different kinds of players. Instead of always using the same type of name and pronoun, mix them:

    • Alex takes their turn and moves 2 spaces.
    • Fatima draws 3 cards and keeps 1.
    • Diego places his token on the market.
    • Mei places her worker on the farm.

    Expressions

Each language reflects its history and the values it conveys, whether spoken or written. Unfortunately, languages have also been used as tools of domination to impose a particular worldview.

The goal today is not to strip a language of its identity, but to identify and address the legacies of the past so that it better aligns with our current values. This requires revisiting and replacing offensive, racist, or degrading terms that still exist in language.

    Translation

When you decide to make your game available in multiple languages, it is important to maintain the same standards in terms of neutrality. If you work with an external company or individual, let them know that you want to respect gender neutrality. Many of them will be able to advise you on the best way to proceed.
